Evidence / Question & answer

What is a near-death experience?

An NDE describes a reported experience associated with a near-death situation; studies use definitions or scales to classify its features. Not every account in an afterlife book is a medical NDE, and a phenomenological score is not a truth score.

Context and limits

Cardiac arrest, coma, and irreversible death are different categories. A recovered patient’s memory does not by itself establish when the experience occurred. Research must make clinical circumstances and the source of information visible.
