Grace, not a transaction

Salvation is God’s gift in Christ, not something bought, earned, or guaranteed by reciting a formula.

Read in context

Paul moves from the human condition apart from Christ to God’s mercy and life with Christ. The larger chapter also describes reconciliation across division. Read the familiar grace language within this movement from death to life and from hostility to peace.

What this passage teaches

In this paraphrase, salvation is by grace through faith, not a basis for boasting in works. Those made new in Christ are called into good works. Mercy is the source of a transformed life, not an excuse to remain indifferent to others.

What it does not establish

An email signup, donation, or prayer-button click is not evidence that salvation has occurred. A voluntary prayer can express faith, but it is not a technique that obligates God. Discipleship grows through trusting Christ in community and daily life.

For reflection

Where are you tempted to treat God’s acceptance as something you must purchase or perform?
